About the Author
David Scholes is a writer and also works as an accounting and economic (and occasionally actuarial) consultant to various Australian government departments. This novella is his sixth science fiction book being preceded by another novella and four collections of short stories.
He lives in Canberra, Australia with his wife Joy and dog Maddy and has a married daughter Kristen and a young grandson James.

I found this read to be good but not great. So much more could and should have been done with the character and story line. At some point it all just became too weird and ridiculous. The ending was, well, no spoilers.
The book starts out with a long exposition presented in a biblical style. I was willing to accept this. Then a powerful and mysterious man wanders out the woods near the farmstead of single mother. He soon bonds with the daughter and start helping out around the farm and after that the author abandons any attempt at characterization or traditional story telling and focuses on descriptions of God expelling huge amounts of engery from their bodies and destroying large swaths of land. It just gets more absurd and less accessible as it goes on. I can't recommend this book. It is ridiculous and poorly written. "The Soldier of Brell" is one of those science fiction novels that once you start reading it you can't put it down and once you finish it you become sadly disappointed because you wanted it to go on forever.
I read this and couldn't put it down until the end. Great story!
I was expecting a book for adult readers. This book would be appropriate for adolescents and, if I was reading it as an adolescent, I'd probably give it 4 stars. Lots of action, very speculative (and unlikely) science/technology.
