The second book of the bestselling suspense series, The Devil's Deep

The Devil Peak The Devil Deep Book 2 edition by Michael Wallace Literature Fiction eBooks

I first became aware of Locked In Syndrome (LIS) through Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir , The Diving Bell and the Butterfly . I can't imagine anything more horrible than to have a fully functioning mind imprisoned in a paralyzed body with no way to communicate.

Michael Wallace has constructed a storyline in his series, Devil's Deep , that takes the terror and helplessness to another level. As soon as I finished reading The Devil's Deep which is the first book in the series, I immediately followed it with The Devil's Peak (Devil's Deep) .

What could be more terrifying than LIS? It's being a victim of LIS and being at the mercy of sadistic individuals who want to make sure that others never realize that one is trying to communicate.

I have read a few other thrillers by Michael Wallace and really like the fact that he can sustain suspense in very different story lines. His premise in this series takes a very real physical terror and combines it with evil plotting to provide a very good reading experience.

This story picks up with some of the characters from the first story. The main characters from the first story are now in charge of an organization looking for other patients with Locked-in Syndrome. What they find in a clinic that caters to the super-rich ends up being a truly creepy, twisted tale that builds some good suspense.
I got the 1st book in this series as a free download on my Fire. I really enjoyed it so I purchased this one as well. Very good and interesting story line. A person is "locked" inside their body due to physical trauma. They are unable to move their arms and legs, and can't talk, so people think they are in a vegetative state. But really their brains, ears and eyes are still working fine. This second book focused more on Becca than it did on Wes, but I enjoy both characters so it was still fine.
I almost didn't get this book because it did not look like something I would be interested in. I thought it would be boring after awhile. Boy was I wrong!I! I had previously got the first book and decided to try to read them. Once I started, I could not put the first one down. I read both of them in 3 days. I would have read them quicker if my family could have gone without the basic necessities. lol It made me think about what precautions I could take. I highly recommend this book and author.
I have read literally hundreds of books since I retired. THIS NOVEL IS AMONG THE VERY FEW TERRIFIC well written, fast paced stories I have come across. Mr. Wallace has written at least one other book. You can not miss reading these novels. The plot is very intriguing and the writing is crisp. The pace is constant and will keep you up at night; promise.

Please don't skip this book. I guarantee you you'll also want to read more books by Mr. Wallace. PJH
This was one book hat I was unable to put down. The Author had a way of taking you inside the story regarding a person that is unable to move but his brain is still active. It as very suspenseful but the idea that a person can be so mean to a completely disabled person, even for money, is mind boggling. This book should be read and they will be unable to put it down until the very end.
Another thrilling installment in the series. Very suspenseful...leaving me with a constant sense of urgency as Becca and Wes continue their quest to identify and rescue patients with locked-in syndrome. That in itself is a nightmarish thought - being completely paralyzed and unable to communicate your every thought..No way to let anyone know that you are not in a vegetative state but still a thinking, feeling person trapped in a non functioning body. I can't even imagine. Now picture that you are this patient and your constant companion is a psychotic patient who has gone off her meds. She is the only person who knows Walter is in there and who understands his blinks are Morse code. But she's not about to tell anyone that Walter can communicate because she has her own agenda. Thrilling until the bitter end, fast paced and full of treachery and madness.
Fast, fascinating read. Well–constructed plot that kept this reader riveted. I haven't read "The Devil's Deep" but to me, this book stands on its own.

Book opens with a man in a locked down state who has regained use of his mind—internal—and is frantically trying to convey a message by blinking Morse code in one eye. But this man has a girlfriend, Darlene, who will go to great lengths, including murder, to avoid any improvement or void any attempt at communication to or from him.

Wesley, a health worker, wants to find out why his uncle died mysteriously in Costa Rica and so he goes there with Becca, a doctor, to investigate. While this part seems shoveled in to show off the author’s knowledge of that country and diving, it includes a tension-filled underwater sequence that makes it worthwhile.

Overall, a page turner, with vivid sequences, good characters, a pull-me-in and can’t-put-down plot. A few glitches that this reader, in my eagerness to discover the truth, was willing to overlook.

If you want a fast read with an intense plot, this is for you.
